Photograph, Scout Hall at 7 Robinson Road, Surrey Hills in 1990
The Box Hill Reporter noted on 22 January 1926 that at the monthly meeting of the Surrey Hills Progress Association the Secretary reported that “the ground had been purchased for the Boy Scout Hall, that plans had been prepared, and accepted by the building committee. As soon as the timber was available the work would be proceeded with. The Boy Scout Hall movement has been taken up by the association to try to secure a permanent meeting place for the boys of the district. Up till now they have no fixed place, nor have they had a qualified scout master. Mr. Bert Chenu, one of the committee, has been appointed to that position, and is carrying out his duties energetically. Having raised enough money to purchase the land (situated in Robinson's road, Surrey-Hills near the Drill Hall) the association's committee is now about to erect the building by means of properly organised working bees.” The Association organised markets, card evenings and dances to raise necessary funds. The volunteer labour included the parents of boys who had become scouts, led by builder Robert Hayes of 186 Union Road and his son, who was also a builder. Early ownership is unclear as it is believed that it was not purchased by the scouting movement until 1955. The hall was used by other groups as well as the scouts. Benmont Kindergarten operated on the site from c1930. This is confirmed by oral testimony, Sands & McDougall entries and the Alan Hold property register (part of the SHNC Heritage Collection.) It was also used as a ballet school and for local dances. The hall was situated on a small block of land, just 410 sq m, and in late 2019 it was put up for sale by Scouts Victoria. Most recently home to 1st Boroondara Scout Group and previously 11th Camberwell Scouts, it was sold for something near $1.3M. During May 2020 the modest hall was demolished. Items of significance were removed before the sale by Scout Heritage. Medal - Bryson's Medal, Aronson & Co
The Medal was won by WJ Mahon, Best Bowling Average, Yackandandah Cricket Association 1923-1924' It was donated to Yackandandah Cricket Club by Mrs Evelyn Drummond, daughter of William James Mahon. An Allans Flat cricketer, Jim Mahon was a third-generation Allan's Flat/ Osborne's Flat resident. His father, Henry, keenly followed football and cricket. His son, Mervyn, Captained Yackandandah in cricket and served as Club Treasurer. Jim, like Merv, represented his association at Country Week Cricket. (notes accompanying medal on donation - source Yack Cricket Club)The item is of local significance, in the story of cricket in Yackandandah. Cricket has been played in the district since 1860, and the Medal was an important exhibit in a celebration of 150 years of cricket in Yackandandah, 2010. The medal is a good example of a practice used in the creation of trophies, where a base item is created, and a sport-specific item added. In this case the addition is a representation of a cricketer, with arm aloft, ie a bowler. Cavell, 1990, observes that Aronson & Co used this to create medals/medalets for a variety of sports, and includes a selection of images of different bases to which representations of different sports are added. Another example is the Woy Woy Champion 1925 awarded to cyclist K. Ross, held by the National Museum of Australia. The same practice is used extensively now, albeit in plastic and synthetic wood, rather than gold.Gold, wreath shaped fob medallion/medalet. Central circle (attached as a separate item) shows cricketer holding aloft a ball. Back engraved. Attached to silver-coloured, metal link chain with bar and hook fastener. Book, Dennington Cricket Club 1937-2007, 2008
This book gives details of the history of the Dennington Cricket Club from 1937 to 2007. Malcolm Kelson compiled the statistical batting and bowling details for each year and provided a summary of each year’s performance, including the results of every A Grade/Division One game played. The history of the Cricket Club and the personal profiles of long-serving club members were compiled by David Kelson. From 1937 to 1939 the Dennington Cricket Club competed in the Warrnambool Cricket Association competition. During World War Two the Dennington club was in recess and was re-formed in 1946. Today the club continues to play in the Warrnambool and District Cricket Association competition. The W.D.C.A. has 13 competing teams across three divisions. This book is of considerable interest as it contains the history of the Dennington Cricket Club, one of the important sporting clubs in Dennington, five kilometres north west of the Warrnambool Central Business District. This is a soft cover book of 202 pages. The front cover has a white background with a black and white photograph of the Dennington Cricket Ovals in 1968. The back cover has a white background with black and white photographs of the Ladies Committee in 1954 and the P. G. Kelson Pavilion in 1962. Signature Cloth
Donor located cloth in the house of his cousin, Olive Perkins, os Seaspray, possibly in 1999. Olive Perkins had no known association with Stratford, apart from being friends with some members of the Stratford Methodist church, but the M. Perkins who appears thereon may have been her mother, and Olive Perkins also appears. It appears, as Methodists were opposed to raffles, which they saw as gambling, that a fee may have been paid to have a name included on a block. It is assumed the quilt was then sold.A degraded signature cloth from the Stratford Methodist Church Harvest Festival 1918. It contains a central block with 20 surrounding blocks. Certificate - Certificate - Historic Buildings, Portland Town Hall, 1974
From the Victorian Heritage Register: The foundation stone of the original Portland Town Hall was laid by William Learmonth on 21st September, 1863 following a competition and subsequent public controversy over the permitted entry of architect John Barrow. The conservative classical design of municipal surveyor Alexander Ross was preferred and this axially planned design with central council chamber and side offices fronted by a fine axed pedimented gable entablature of basalt and Tuscan Doric pilasters was completed by 24th may 1864. The old Town Hall is one of a distinguished group of public buildings in Portland and an interesting example of conservative classical architecture of the first years of settlement in western Victoria. The basalt structure was partially erected of stone from the Portland stockade and has significant historical associations with local Government administration in the district. The Town Hall is the most impressive work of Alexander Ross, a surveyor architect whose career remains largely undocumented. The old Town Hall at Portland has been discreetly extended at the rear to provide additional meeting room accommodation. The premises are no longer used for local government administration.A4 sized certificate demonstrating Portland Town Hall's special significance to the state of Victoria & inclusion on the Historic Building Register. Singed by Robert Maclellan, Minister for planning & Historic Buildings Council Chairperson. Bacchus Marsh & District Historical Society
Photograph, Delegates 1913 Bacchus Marsh District Football Association
Australian Rules football had been played in the Bacchus Marsh area from at least the 1870s. The first meeting to form a club was held in Bacchus Marsh in 1874 but it was not until the 1880s that regular matches were played in the district. In 1912 it was decided by representatives from a number of football clubs in the district to form a football association to better organize and promote the development of the game in the district. Hence by 25 May 1912 the Bacchus Marsh District Football Association was formed comprising the following clubs: Bacchus Marsh, Deer Park, Melton, Parwan, and Maddingley. This image shows the delegates from the various clubs to the newly formed association. The individual people in the image have been specifically identified but the clubs they represented have not. The unnamed umpires in the image have been identified by the honorary historian and statistician of the Australian Football League Umpires Association, David Flegg. Left, Fred Lucas (Goal Umpire), centre, Evan James (Field Umpire), and right, James Smith (Goal Umpire). The date of this image is 9th August 1913. Newspaper reports in the Bacchus Marsh Express on 9th August confirm the participation of these umpires in a Bacchus Marsh versus Melton match on this date. The match took place at Maddingley Park, which appears to be the location where the picture was taken. This item has historic and social significance as an image of one of the early sporting administrators of Bacchus Marsh and District. It is a typical example of group photographs of this era. It is evidence of the transition of football from a social informal setting to an organised activity and signals the growth of importance of sport, in this case Australian Rules football, as a cultural and social activity central to the Australian ethos. It reflects the pride local districts invested in their local sporting clubs. A sepia photograph mounted on a cardboard mat, showing a group of sixteen men arranged in three rows in a park setting. Twelve men are dressed in suits, collars and ties, a thirteenth man is wearing a uniform coat with epaulettes. Several of the men are wearing ribbons which may indicate their membership of the Association, and/or their status as delegates. In the front row, three men are crouched, two wearing white coats over their suits, and holding white flags, denoting their role as goal umpires. The middle man, the field umpire, is wearing long-sleeved top, shorts, socks and laced-up athletic shoes. On the front, under the photo, hand-written, the words: Delegates 1913. Bacchus Marsh District Football Association. Beneath the title: Top Frank Winderlich. H Connors (s deleted). G.Coburn. P. McDonald. McKenzie? Grant Morton. Edgar Smith. Mid: Roy Edwards. J.J.Barry Snr. Ross. Robert Dugdale. Cunningham. J.B. Doherty. Bottom Row. Not inscribed but have been identified as VFL accredited umpires. Left, Goal Umpire Fred Lucas, centre Field Umpire Evan James, right Goal Umpire James Smith. On the back: Hand-written: Executive members of the First Football League (formed 1912). Given by E.Kight.
